How to Overcome the Challenges of Sharing the Gospel with Family
Sharing the Gospel is out of most people’s comfort zones. Add family to the mix, and it becomes even more intimidating. It’s funny how the people you know best and are closest to can often be the hardest people to be bold around when sharing your faith. Why is that?
Maybe you have a hard time believing a particular person could change. Or you’re worried that you might stumble over your words and create an awkward situation. You might even be someone who loves Jesus deeply but often keeps your faith private to avoid drawing attention to yourself. Sharing the most meaningful and life-transforming part of your life can feel incredibly vulnerable.
As challenging and convincing as your hesitations might sound, consider what God can do through your obedience and “yes” to sharing the Gospel. He is at work, reaching the unlikeliest of people and transforming lives, and He has given you a specific role to play in all of this.
So, how can you overcome these challenges and boldly share the Gospel with the people the Lord has placed in your life?
1. Pray
- Pray that you would be burdened for the Salvation of others. May it be that you deeply care about others knowing Jesus.
- Pray for yourself: Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the boldness to speak with clarity and kindness.
- Pray for your family: Ask the Lord to prepare their hearts and minds to receive the Gospel.
- Pray that the Lord would provide natural opportunities in conversations to share the Gospel.
God is so faithful to answer these prayers. He is ready and willing to give you what you need to accomplish His purposes and will!
2. Shift Your Perspective
- If you’re worried about drawing attention or not saying the right things, remember it’s not about you. It’s about glorifying the Lord through your words and actions!
- Take heart in Paul’s encouragement to live boldly: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity” 1 Timothy 4:12.
- Remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
This is our calling as believers — to bring Glory to God in our witness. Live it out faithfully and trust that He is working in and through you.
3. Stay Committed to the Lord’s Call
- Make a commitment to the Lord by saying “yes” to Jesus’ call for all believers.
- Jesus commanded us to, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” Mark 16:15.
- Be faithful to God by stewarding well the people He has given you to reach today.
- Be consistent and make sharing the Gospel an integral part of your life. May the Gospel become a natural part of your conversations.
Don’t let fear or discouragement prevent you from stepping out in faith. If the Holy Spirit is nudging you to share the Gospel, follow through and He will guide you.
Hesitations and fears are natural, but it is possible to overcome them with the Holy Spirit working in you. I pray that the Lord will give you an unshakable burden for the salvation of your family members and people outside of your family. May you step out in faith and courageously make Christ known to a world that desperately needs to know Him.
